When I first started quilting, I googled EVERYTHING to figure out what I needed to become a successful quilter. You really don't need too much, but I thought I would compile a list of the things I think are very helpful, and things I use every single day!
1. Self-healing cutting mat. Listen, there are smaller sizes and I know it's tempting to start small. But this is one purchase in which I would highly recommend getting the 24"x 36" size. This size of mat can easily fit your width of fabric, making it easier to make long cuts.
2. A rotary cutter. Having a nice rotary cutter makes cutting so much easier, especially if your quilt pattern has lots of cuts. I like this Olfa one because it is easy to use if you are right or left handed! I am left handed and have definitely had to modify quilt tools in the past to work for me!
3. A 6" x 24" ruler. I like this Fiskars one because it has 30, 45, and 60 degree angles on it, and it has all the measurements you need without it being too filled in with colors and lines. This ruler is super handy for cutting width of fabric strips.
4. A 3" x 18" ruler. If you have to choose only one ruler, I would choose the 6" x 24" one, but having this 3" x 18" ruler is nice for smaller cuts.
5. A rotating cutting mat. If you are doing lots of half square triangles or flying geese, this is very nice to have. It prevents you from having to remeasure each time you need to trim.
6. A sewing machine. I realize this one is obvious! But, having a good sewing machine really helps you have a better experience! I use this Janome one, and it has been such a good machine for me! It is a very affordable option if you are just starting.
7. A Wool Pressing Mat. I LOVE this tool so much. A regular ironing board does the same job, but a pressing mat is so nice because it can sit on your desk next to your machine so you have everything in one area. I also feel like it helps your seams stay nice and flat!
8. Needles. Most machines come with extra needles, but once you go through those, you'll need to have more on hand! These are the ones I buy that seem to work well.
9. Sewing Clips. I used pins for years, and there is definitely a time and place for pins. But wherever possible, I use these craft/sewing clips instead! I especially like using them for organizing my stacks after cutting.
10. An iron. It is so important to press your seams between each step! This will help you have accurate measurements and matching points. I use and love this automatic lifting iron, but you can use whatever iron you already have!
Now you get to do the fun part! Shop for fabric, find a pattern, and start sewing! Any essential items that I missed? Leave them in the comments below!
Happy Quilting,
